The US Government and ISO have adopted new parts marking standards for implementation across their networks including the Department of Defense under mil-std-130. Under these requirements, any asset worth more than $5,000 must be:
1) Clearly marked and identified with a Unique item identifier containing a 2D data matrix code with ISO15434 formats
2) Each tangible item must be clearly and unambiguously identified using a unique character string for that item to ensure it is identifiable from any other asset.
It is important to note that the UID parts marking requirements apply to all federal contractors supplying military or non-military equipment post September 2007.
The key criteria here of the parts marking standards is that any label applied to any given part must contain certain data elements in both a data matrix and human readable form, with such data to ensure the absolute identity of a given asset.
Accordingly, government and private sector companies are changing they way they identify and label their products to meet these new government and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) standards.
